A direct cylinder will be heated by an immersion heater (or 2) whilst an indirect cylinder has an internal coil fitted which is connected to the primary heat source water, ie a boiler of some sort.
The heated water passing through this coil heats the water in the cylinder around it, but never mixes with it.
