At some stage our living room had a wall mounted gas fire installed. This was then removed and we have been left with the connecting elbow piece (sorry, don't know what it's really called) sticking up about 3" at the junction between the concrete hearth and the floorboards (which we have sanded).

Is there an alternative fitting to cap this redundant pipe which will be flush with the floor? We wish to tile over the concrete and would rather hide the end of this pipe underneath, rather than have to box around it somehow. Unfortunately we cannot access the pipe at any other point without wrecking the floorboards.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I dont see how you can cap it flush to the floor without lifting a floorboard. Can you trace it back anywhere and cap it earlier?

you should find the other end first to confirm it really is redundant and no longer connected, jsut see it now , angle grinder, gas still connected and .............B O O M

you wont get rid of the restrictor elbow without lifting at least the one board it protrudes through so you can cut it back and solder a cap on it (well your corgi man can anyway)

Many thanks forall your replies.

I am pretty sure the pipe IS still connected (I meant redundant because there is no fire there anymore) - be assured I have no intention of going anywhere near it with an angle grinder, or anything else for that matter!

The pipe branches off the supply feeding the boiler somewhere underneath the dining room, which is inaccessible without lifting boards. As we've just sanded the floorboards I don't really think it's worth damaging them for this. Looks like I'll have to find a cunning way of boxing it in.

Thanks again.
