Since getting this thing up and running I have tried to install the updates...both manually and automatically when the little yellow appears in the task bar.

It appears to go through the process of installing them but then tells me all could not be loaded.

Have the same problem from the microsoft site too..it scans the computer, tells me what I need then runs through the process...then shortly after tells me none were loaded.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I had the same problem after running a repair installation..

Try the following...

1.) Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then OK.

2.) At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\Edb.log *.tst

Note any spaces.

This worked for me, if you need to try another fix, search microsoft database for article 822798...

Cheers for that Trazor..

Didnt have any joy it said 'cannot find file specified'

I cut and pasted the commandas you wrote it..

Interesting phonecall today to microsoft uk...they reckon I am not entitled to any updates because I installed the OEM version myself and im not a registered system builder

They said I should have purchased the retail version (three times the price!!)

I cant see the diference..plus I have installed OEM versions plenty of times before and still got the updates.

I'll have a look on their database for that article you mentioned...cheers.

Update...just check that out...some of which is a little above me I must admit...however Ihave also noticed there is not one single mention about OEM versions not supporting updates...even though two people from Microsoft told me the same thing.

Have tried that...it takes you directly to the site, scans then downloads....after the downloads are done it come sup that they have all failed.. :(

It doesnt make sense why they are saying it...but their angle is that you can only get help if you are a registered system builder or have the retail version.

What about reinstalling Windowa from scratch, this will solve the problem, and will probably solve your sound issue as well..

OEM versions of windows update OK, once you have validated online....

Just thought have you got the latest version of windows installer, installed.
Go to this site to download....

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en

Download and run the .exe file about 2/3 rds the way down.

The way I understand it is as an OEM customer you can still receive the updates etc. One main point is you do not get technical support from Microsoft, you need to contact the person/company which supplied your PC for support, which if you built your own PC isn't a lot of help!!

Have a read.

It's possible for the Software Distribution folder to become damaged. Try Method 10.
