Hi, first post here for me. I am working on updating a 1970s house, currently working on the hall and stairs. The skirting board on the stairs looks awful, multiple coats of paint etc. I understand that changing it isn't really an option so what's the best way to update it? Sand it right down? How would I sand the moulding on top? Or could I try to cut the top moulding off and fit a new moulding on top? DIY novice so any help or suggestions appreciated. TIA

I used one of these to remove all the paint from stairs and spindles

Much easier than sanding and just needed a light sand afterwards

Heat gun and scrape or paint stripper , sanding only good if surface is not bad .
