I've noticed that ebuyer have a 500VA UPS on offer.

I really need a 1000VA unit, but how likely is it that I could just swap out the battery in the 500VA for a higher capacity one?

ie are the electronics likely to be the same?

In a nutshell, no. The switching components will be rated for 500VA service.

1000VA is pretty huge for a UPS - why do you need such a high capacity?

Its a workstation large PSU and some internal drives, with two monitors, some external HDs and some other USB and other stuff.

I did an online query/test on the APC website and it came up with 1000VA.

I've currently got a cheap no-name one, but it seems the batteries are on the way out and I'm not convinced the shut-down software is reliable if I am not around when a power cut occurs - so I am looking for a replacement

Is your UPS an online type ( IE always on and supplying the load ) or is it only "on" when the mains fails?

Whatever type it is you can only find out how good/bad it is by switching off the mains and see what happens!!!!

There will be a battery meter ( usually leds) to indicate the state of battery charge... All you can do is wait and watch.. This wouls also apply to any new UPS you fit as there is no other way to do it. Someone is sure to say "use a dummy load" but in my experience the only way is "suck it and see"

A 1 kva UPS I have here will run my server for almost an hour before the shutdown cuts in..( Liebert Upstation GXT )
