The job I have is total re-wire of 1930's house with flat roof. Obviously I need to run a new lighting circuit upstairs, the void is about 5 inches and I don't really want to have to bash the ceilings apart to run the cable, has anyone ANY suggestions what I can do??

Many thanks to the experienced fellas for suggestions

Find out which way the joists go. Cut a small hole where the light fitting is to be installed, then cut another hole at the wall following the line of the joists, so you can run the cable between the two holes (and therefore between the joists).

Once at the wall, the cable can be chased into the wall horizontally just below the ceiling and taken to the switch or wherever as required.
This way the wall chase can be filled as normal, and there is only one small hole in the ceiling to fill.
