i have a thorn olympic,about 30 years old which has served us superbly.however about two weeks ago the upstairs rads started coming on when we had the system on hot water only, not the downstairs,just the upstairs . has anyone experienced this,and if so what might be a possible cause

Being 30 year old the chances are you have a gravity system . 4 pipes coming off boiler 2 large(28mm) and 2 smaller (22mm)
On the 22mm pipe there will be a brass fitting about 3 inches long this is an anti gravity valve and it is meant to to stop rads coming on upstairs when just the water is on, These wear and do not reseat allowing water to pass to upstairs rads ... needs replacing not an expensive part
