Using a lighting circuit for something other than lighting

I'm just having my kitchen refitted at the moment, and I've just thought of something I should have catered for when sorting the electrics out. I have a few worktop level sockets, but no spare ones really and I like to have a mains radio on a shelf.

Now, I have a lighting circuit in place which will feed some small slimline flourescent link lighting down onto the worktop, fitting under the wall units. Since this circuit only has a very small load - would it be safe to wire in a radio as well ?

I know it's not really the done thing - but would it be safe?

Thanks,

Phil

Only if you where to fit a 5A outlet or fuse spur with a 3/5A fuse in rather than a 13A socket outlet..........

I decided to put some more sockets on the ring rather than do anything dodgy.

Thanks, Phil

whilst you could run your radio from a socket connect to the lighting circuit the danger is someone else could change the fuse in the spur then, well the consequences don't bear thinking about.
Right choice to add them to the main ring

Thanks again for your good advice - I've now added a couple of extra double sockets at worktop height, so now I have plenty. I've been working on this kitchen for three months now. The fitters have put 4 days in and this weekend was my last chance to change any of the electrics. I guess I was looking for an easy way out - thanks for convincing me otherwise!

Not if the spur has been designed to do the job it supposed to do........(ie) The same danger exists if some-one was to change the fuse wire in a 5amp semi enclosed 3036 fuse to 30amp.....
