Hi all, i am going to buy a new Mig welder as the one i have getting on a bit and the one i am after is bigger at 200amp, now i need to go upto a 16amp supply towards the standard 13 amp socket i am using now.

I have an old cooker socket as in the pic below

It might be possible with some alterations, but best to check with your electrician

any advice please folks.
Hello Wayne, my advice would be not to.
The cooker circuit should be independent of all other circuits, so adding an extra power outlet other than for cooking is not recommend.
If you could extend off the existing socket circuit in the house it would be possible, or install a new circuit with RCD protection for both options, you will need to use a special male and female connector for the welder.
Also be aware there maybe legal requirements, regarding notifiable work.

Not as easy as rewiring a cooker. If you take the cable outside there are a lot of potential pitfalls to overcome.

I understand the 200A rating of your welder, I've got a 130 (turbo) in my garage.

It isn't as easy as just finding a circuit over 16A and connecting to it. Doing so might work but in the event of a fault could be lethal.

I would strongly advise you to find a local electrician who could look at your setup and advise you.

Thanks for that, good to ask as i am not fully up with the understanding of electrics.
I just looked at it as its own feed from the consumer which will be enough for the welder then add its own garage consumer with a 16 amp, so infact it would be the same as starting its own feed from the house consumer like the cooker was.
Very complicating for me this sparky stuff, i will see a sparky to see what he says.

Thanks for the help guys :D
