As I mentioned in a previous post the quotes to replaster my living room from scratch are higher than expected, so I was wondering...
If on the 2 longest walls I put up some battons, got some 25mm insulation and boarded over the top would this be feesable? I wouldn't do it on the 2 end walls for various reasons that wouldn't be practical.

I've got a 1930's house, all brick & no cavity walls in this room, so although I'd loose some floorspace, 1 I'd acheive better insulation and 2 wouldn't it be cheaper to plaster if only the 2 end walls (one has the window and the other is an arch way) went back to the brickwork?

please take no notice (obviously i'm far too sentimental) but i'm disappointed that you cant get good enough quotes.

i would ask that you do persevere on the quotes as your ending up making quite a lot of work for yourself when you shouldn't need to. have you exhausted all contacts for a decent plasterer including friends and friends of friends etc.

your right on the insulation. i am not convinced on the cost though (insulation, battens, plasterboard).

the plain walls for me to plaster would be the easiest (ie cheapest to you). the windows and arches (not a favourite of mine) are where my time would go. i would need to put beading up and the small areas are always the trickiest.

overall i am not sure it would be cost effective and i think you'll end up with a 2nd class job.

duckegg,

dont give up.

a lot of so called plasterers will overprice a job like yours simply because it is either too time consuming to do a traditional plastering job or because it is beyond there capabilities (probably latter)

Have a ring around and try to find one of us old timers who have been brought up with the "old ways"

I'm not knocking these new young uns but they just want to skim a nice flat piece of plasterboard then get down tu pub for a face full of after shock.

What kind of quotes are you getting again?

How much a day do you think is reasonable for a plasterer to charge?
