Be it a freezer used at fridge temperature, of fridge used at cooler temperature or even higher to for example brew beer are there any problems.
A) When the existing thermostat is swapped.
B) When a thermostat is inserted into the supply.
I would have thought putting a freezer in a cool garage would have made it cheaper to run and been OK but I note with many units it warns not to use below the stated ambient temperature lower limits. One has to buy specials to use in a cold garage.
So it is possible there is something I have not considered with using the units at different temperatures than designed.
I have a old Hoover fridge/freezer HCA 394 FK PW which in the winter I use as just an insulated box to brew beer in. I know there is a fault with insulation which is why it was taken out of service. But running fridge part to get 18°C in the summer by simply only powering up when temperature above 18°C using an external thermostat has been a consideration.
Second is a LEC mini freezer 32 litre having problems getting replacement thermostat and was considering fitting a digital temperature controller which would also allow me to alter temperature to +5°C and use it as a fridge.
I don't see any problems with the LEC although could be wrong. The Hoover not so sure as it would clearly also try to cool the freezer section and there is some electronic control although this is also faulty fridge light switches on and off when you open the door.
It is hopped the garage will stay cool enough all summer to continue brewing without use of fridge motor but if not then once switched on using external temperature controller I will not monitor it very often so fault could go unnoticed.
I used a MH1210A temperature controller which only has one relay but can be configured either to heat or cool in hind sight I should have got a STC1000 which looks very similar but has relay for heating and relay for cooling but if there is a reason why I should not use the Hoover to cool then no point in getting the right version.
