Using software to plan a garden

Since we've moved in to the new house the garden has been totally neglected as we focus on house DIY.

Now I want to plan what to do with the garden so I can start working on it in Spring.

Does anyone have any tips on how to plan it out. Is there a free software package that could help with the layout and planning the garden work?
