Noticed a burning smell and smoke coming from my vacuum cleaner so took it apart, cleaned out the loose dust/hair, and fitted a new belt.

There's no smoke now but the motor is getting very hot and having taken it apart again, the motor shaft is very very hot after it's only been switched on for a few seconds. Is it normal for the shaft to get so hot? Surely after the unithas been swiched off, the heat will start to warp the belt.

Hard to tell if the heat is being generated by the motor itself or by the friction between the belt and the spindle. Either way, is it normal for teh shaft to be red hot!?

The belt shouldn't be hot to the extent that you could fry chips on it......is the motor shaft still parallel?
Check the beaters or whatever the belt is attached to at the other end.....it should be free to revolve.
You have fitted the correct belt, haven't you?
John :)
