Hi forum Folk, I hope you can help because this, like many DIY things is beyond me...

My mother recently moved house and the current warm air circulating system is defunct. Rather than patch it up she has decided to install a new heating system.

She has been in touch with a small company who maintained her last gas combi system. They have advised her to remove the old 1980's system with a new combi/radiator one. They seem entirely reputable and have been of great help to Mum in the past.

I have (quite) a few questions I need advice on before she forks out £6000 which has been quoted for A) removal of immersion water tank (from bedroom cupboard) B) remove warm air circulation boiler (gas) and ducting C) remove cylinder (which I assume means the water tank mentioned above) D) remove roof tanks E) install 2 pipe drip system. D) Install radiators and valves thoughout the house.

My questions:
1. The old boiler is contained in a downstairs cupboard in the hall. It has been proposed that the new installation would be in the cupboard upstairs where the hot water tank is currently sited (having removed the water tank) I am not keen on having a combi boiler in a bedroom. Despite the present installation being rigged up in the downstairs cupboard, the technician told my mum it would demand more pipe work to install the new system in the same place. Is this correct? If placed downstairs would the installation be more expensive?

2. If the new combi boiler goes into the bedroom cupboard, it would have to replace the Emerson water tank due to lack of space. Surely, an Emerson heater (electric) would be a good back up if there was any problem with the gas combi boiler.agree?

3. The new combi boiler, if installed in the bedroom, would need to be "room sealed" and there be an exit through the roof. As the previous installation was in the cupboard directly below the proposed site (ie where the hot water tank is) could the installation not simply involve an extra long pipe from the lower floor cupboard and new boiler, going from ceiling to floor to loft and out?

4. The installers have said the new system would be a "Valliant combination" and yet they mention no kW'age on the quote. The house is a 4bed/ 2 bathroom property. It's highly unlikely both bathrooms would be being used at the same time. There is a Triton electric shower downstairs. Will the new system be compatable? I don't know if this is a power shower which, from what I've read, doesnt seem to be great with combi heating system. I would think she would need a 28KW boiler but grateful for other opinions.

Any help you could offer me would be greatly appreciated. I am meeting with the technician next week and would really like to not be taken for a mug. Are there any other questions I should ask?

£6000 seems excessive, but not having seen the job I wouldn't like to rule it out completely. I would strongly urge you to get at least 2 more quotes.

First of all ask for his Siret number!

Then the Carte d'indentification" which is issued by their local Chambre de Metiers
