Hi all,
My machine stopped working the other day. In fact, it tripped my main lekky supply. I noticed that a wisp of smoke came out of the housing & a slight smell of 'electrical' burning.
I was about to search for a motor,,,, but was wondering if it might only need brushes ?

I realise that you will probably need to know more, but before I strip it down, was trying to get some basic information.

Although the machine is quite old (like the owner) it hasn't been used a great deal, as it was the 'stand-by' for many years,,,, in fact some parts havn't been used at all. The 'washing' side of it has never been used & I still have the original shampoo etc.

all advice welcome.

thanks for reading

Anything is possible, but burning smell & smoke do not usually indicate new brushes reqired. Invariably in my experience a new motor more likely, but once you have taken it out & stripped it down it will be much more obvious.

Thanks JJ,
I tried it earlier & it seemed to work o.k,,,,

This would make me agree that the brushes arn't (in themselves) at fault, or it would still be in the same state.

It also shows that the motor isn't entirely bu@@ered, tho' it could be on it's way out ?!?!

The day it happened I had only done a couple of rooms of my bungalow, so it wasn't over-used !

There is a slight chance that it over-heated,,,, I might have suspected some thermal cut-out, but that wouldn't trip the lekky, nor make a burning smell.

When I have a moment, i'll whip the motor out and see if there is anything obvious that jumps out at me,,,,,, I don't like it when you can't see whats wrong !

thanks again mate,,,,

Where is it stored it could have gotten damp or is there a chance that you vacumned water into it?

It was kept in the bedroom wardrobe.
It's now kept in a cupboard in the hall.

The 121 is a wet'n'dry item,,,, so water wouldn't cause a problem,,,,,

(((unless it's like a Tagine that I bought. It cracked and I was told it was "because i'd used it in the oven" etc !!!)))

As I say, i'm hoping to know more when I get it apart.

Thanks for your help so far.

Yes I think you should have said shouldn't rather than wouldn't :)
