Can anyone tell me what this thing is called and where can I buy it from? It came from the upper vent of a wood window. Thanks.

It's an insert into the vent from the outside. Need some because some are missing and some are broken. The one linked is surface mounted I think.

you can buy stainless steel mesh and gauze in cut sizes. some suppliers advertise on ebay. I suppose you want an insect-proof size.

fine gauze can be cut with tin-snips or poultry shears.

kitchen scissors might work, but perhaps only once.

Ok, there are also aluminium ones. That will save my scissors, and much cheaper.

Wasn't sure what size holes I needed in mesh, so I test bought the cheapest one on ebay. It's pretty low quality but passable. The mesh wires are mechanically pressed together and not welded. It would basically fall apart if manipulated slightly strenuously. I could see similar meshes that appear to be welded. Those are called Aluminium Modelling Mesh. Not sure what they are used for, but should be OK for my purpose. The smallest 1.5mm hole meshes will work for window vents to keep out bugs.
