My w/machine's standpipe goes into a p-trap which appears to be a vented type (or is it anti-syphon) - see pic attached. My question is, what is the purpose of the knob on the top of the trap and should it need adjusting to help against gurgling noises? I'm reluctant to loosen it off any in case it causes leaks. (NB: inherited plumbing in an old French house so don't blame me for that).

I didn't think they have adjustment.
Knob is for servicing and cleaning out trap I thought.
Not my area but what I thought

As @Wayners , those appear to be access plugs for cleaning out the traps.
I don't believe they are vented either - there is usually some evidence of the moulding for the vent channel.
To stop the gurgling you may need a vented trap! :)

...although also, that electrical cable could do with sorting out - especially given the proximity to the water sources. I'm not familiar with that type of plug, but hopefully the cable can be pushed up inside the plug and secured with a cord grip, without too much hassle.

Interesting fittings.
Not seen them here before.

I'd defo say they are cleaning eyes.
I Could do with those in some instances... Can never have too much cleaning access for drainage!

Gurgling will probably be as a result of siphonage in the pipe, when the machine is discharging, the pipework is filling with water and then creating suction which is pulling the remaining water with it.

I'd suggest finding a suitable access point downstream, giving the pipework a through clean, and see if that improves the situation.
