Our loft has always been hot. Sauna style hot.
Recently we had it boarded and a new pull down ladder put in. They did a fantatic job and very happy. We're just going to use it for extra storage, Christmas decorations, decerating clothes, cardboard boxes of old games.. etc.. etc..
I decided to stick a thermometer up there just to see how hot I though hot really was. On a 30C day recently the thermometer read 48.2. This seems madness to me.
The lads boarding the loft mentioned that the felt we've got is non breathable...
I genually don't beleive the new boarding has made it any hotter. It's always been hot. It's only now that I decided to put measure the heat.
Today it's 21 outside and relateively cool up there.

I guess my question is what can I do to try and keep it cooler than 48.2 in the summer! Tile vents ? New felt ? Big dirty hole in the tiles ?
Does it matter that it's that hot ?
I'm actually slightly concerned of storing anything up there now as it might self combust!

You can check the vents are venting properly/exist. Assuming they are you can additional tiles vents or vents in the felt but other than damage to goods stored in the loft no harm will come of it. And whether they would make much difference on a hot day with little breeze is for debate.

"other than damage to goods stored in the loft no harm will come of it."

Hot loft will not be a problem in itself, stored goods may become damaged i.e. old records may warp. Simple.
Thank you.
Totally understandable. You wouldn't store an expensive suit up there just like you wouldn't do in a basement or garage.

Last summer I installed 2 electric velux skylights for a customer, the reason for doing this was so he could let the heat escape from his attic, which in turn would make his bedrooms below hopefully more bearable in the summer months.
