hi, could anyone please advise me on what to do next. when the central heating reaches the required temperature, ww3 breaks out and all the pipes and radiators start banging. Also with this comes an overflow from the expansion tank, i assume the hot water is coming from the safety-vent pipe from the back boiler.

Sounds like boiler boiling (which of course it's not meant to do, hence the word boiler... 
). Various possible causes - sudden halt of water circulation, failed boiler stat, etc. - but as Kev indicated, we need details of boiler and system layout, controls, etc.
