When I flush the toilet is sounds like the QE2 leaving port! The noise appears to be coming from up in the loft. We have found that the noise stops if we turn the cold tap on at the same time as flushing!!

How can we solve this problem once and for all?

change the ballvalve in the cold storage tank

Unfortunately for you your toilet is fed from the cold mains supply and not from a tank in the loft. ;)

No, but it sounds like water hammer. does your cold water to your toilet and washbasin come from up above in loft?

and make sure the pipework is clipped properly ;)

Does it make the noise if you open a tank fed tap.

If not change the ballvalve in the toilet.

Yes it is fed from the loft - the dreadful noise is definitelt coming from the loft

ok, it`s probably down to high pressure and sometimes a fault in the cistern. have someone go in loft, trace pipes to bathroom. pull chain, see what happens then get back. ;)

TROLL ALERT

Follow legion's advice at your peril, he is a troll pretending to be a pro, but actually has very little knowledge about plumbing and heating.

If you are sure your toilet is filled from a tank, you can try changing the ballvalve, or tying a wait to the float. (not too big, 100 - 200 grams)
