I'd like to get my two lads (under 10s) making the odd simple shape out of wood. I can vaguely remember making a swan when I was a kid - just cutting a body and head out of one piece of wood with a jig saw, and then a pair of wings and sticking the three together, followed by a coat of paint. I derived huge satisfaction form that, and I'm wondering if there are any online patterns or other resources that anone could point me at? Searching the internet, most things sem to be far too complex or much bigger projects (like wendy houses and bird boxes).

My first wood project at school was a wooden spatula, involves sawing and sanding and results are quick which is the main thing with small children.

how about somting simple like:

a letter holder
a pencil holder
key hooks

or if u want them to learn how to use more tools
shelves in a shed or the boys bedroom (not yours if u want it nice ;) )

ok i did add bird box so i removed it after re-reading your post, so i;ll replace it with....
picture frames (just some beading, some simple cuts on a peace of plie)

Bigger things can be easier as there's more room for error.

A rectangle of ply or hardboard, some moulding round the edges with butt or mitre joints, stain it up nice, drill a hole in the middle and mount a clock movement on it.

Brilliant! Thanks guys! I'm quite keen for them not to grow up only knowing how to use a games console!
