i've had some new internal doors fitted and put victorian style door knobs on them from Wickes. All 3 sets seem to be only mildly spring-loaded in that i tend to need to turn one way to open, then when i shut it i have to turn handle the other way to release the bolt, i've spayed wd40. All 3 sets are like this, is this what i should expect or should the bolt to return completely when i release the handle ? The carpenters work looks good.

i had a similar problem with door knobs from b&q. They are just not made very well - on mine i had to dismantle the whole lot and perform various minor filings and addition of grease to get them to turn both ways and not jam up.

When the handles are off the door, do they turn/return freely? Does the door latch return under it's own steam?

It could be the handles (very likely), or it could be the spindle thats off-centre or catching on the door as it turns.
