Just found this .. probably of no interest but, the 2T 250 stroker twin was my first bike engine 1960 ....

So much info .. eg
E02T.jpg

Many Villiers engines, exploded dwgs plus parts lists etc ..amazed !!
I like those wondrous drawings ... Technical Illustration a super little skill.

Link to some real engineering
:D :D :D :D :D

A good resource for Villiers old kit tho' !! ;)

Scob -- been galloping Shergar lately ? ;) ;)

was it pushrod then Pip?

Ported not rotary nor pushrod nor cam either side or O/head or desmodromic (what a word eh ?) or sleeve or poppet just good old transfer, inlet and exhaust ports ... ah ! for the simplicity of the old petroiled two-stroke .... ;)

Ajh two stroke missed that bit.
Four stroke man myself except for the petrol strimmer in the garden ;)

desmodromic (what a word eh ?)
good old Ducati :)

I think the Ducati is the only bike utilising the Desmoromic method of valve control, ie, valves opened and closed mechanically not utilising spring power except for the final fraction of closure ....
I remember the beautiful little road going Ducatis of the early 60's.

1957 175 cc Desmodromic Ducati Sport. Look at the tank, 'clip-ons' and aggressive carb venturi !! ..A beauty ! Styliish sign of things to come -- if only we had taken the hint and opened our minds to the CUSTOMER'S desires .... nah, fell at the first hurdle .... Enter Nippon eyes to the future, tuned to the potential market in this petrol headed, island mecca.
De ja vous for our volume car industry ??

While we are on all the different valve-actuation methods and stroking systems (well, both of them!), has anyone else heard of the six-stroke engine? Not really a six-cycle engine, just a mix of 2 and 4 that I read about whilst looking for something else a while back. Rather interesting to read about, and apparently gives immense torque. Based on a Ducati V2! Still, I think it should still be referred to as a 4-stroke seeing as that is what it is.

Just a thought on the desmodromic system: do F1 engines use this or do they just have very strong springs to close the valves?

..... Pneumatic valves
Recent Formula 1 engines have resorted to use of pneumatically operated valves to solve the problem of high acceleration of valve opening and closing without excessive cam wear. The cams are omitted entirely, and the opening and shutting of the valves is driven by high pressure air, controlled by computers. With this system, previously unimaginable engine speeds have become routine.

Do not forget 'the sleeve valve' ... ported cylinder within ported cylinder, one cylinder is mechanically rotated via a ring gear at it's base to align inlet and exhaust ports in a 'timed' manner, no springs, large ports with no 'large valve' implications ... beautifully engineered but well outdated now !!

Think I have heard of 6 stroke -- Black Jack was involved I believe - ;)

Hi chaps, long time no post!

Heres another one for you, the rotary disc intake valve:

Quite tunable!!!!

Making me all nostalgic again! :p
