I would assume the van is a diesel? black smoke is an indication of too much fuel, or put another way incorrect fuel air mix.
First thing to check is the air filter, does it require changing?
is the van turbo charged? if so, possible blocked intercooler, or turbo fault.

Overfuelling on a diesel would cause white smoke (unburnt fuel)

Black smoke is usually excessive oil being burnt, or choked are filter

I would say that the white is an indication of serious amount of unburnt fuel but black is an indication of just a little too much fuel which is not being burnt and as stated usually a blocked/restricted air intake.

Black smoke is overfuelling.
Blue smoke is burning oil.
