viynal flooring on concrete.

Hi,
I pulled up an old viynal floor in our basement, but there looks like there is another layer of thin concrete laid on top of the main slab. Some of this thin layer was pulled up with the viynal. My question is: do I need to remove all of this extra layer or just fill in the gaps with a liquid leveler or lay 1/4 ply over the floor then lay the viynal? Ţ

Given that its a cellar, then i think that i would lift all the vinyl, and any loose self levelling compound (SLC). Scrupulousely clean the floor and then lay a coating of SLC.

Loose lay the sheet vinyl (dont glue it down) 24 hrs after spreading the SLC.

If there are any damp issues then come back here.

Thank you for the reply. So I don't need to remove ALL of the old SLC? Just clean it? That sounds a lot easier than taking up all of the old SLC.

There are damp issues with the walls which are going to be fixed, should I have the damp specialists treat the floors as well. They will be doing a cementitious waterproofing system on the walls.

Given that you are in a cellar, and cellar "damp proofing" typically needs to be a combined wall and floor job - then you should be thoroughly certain that the floor is bone dry if its only the walls that are receiving attention.

Allow any damp work to be finished before attempting the floor work.

Perhaps you should do some research on Tanking and damp proofing cellars before any work starts?
