Hi,

I'm in the midst of an on-going saga with the above boiler and would really appreciate any advice. About a week ago it started making a horrible banging noise when I ran the hot water. I discovered that the pressure had dropped to below 1, so I repressurised the system up to 1.5 bar. However it quickly dropped again. There seemed to be a drip from the overflow outside, so I called a plumber and a couple of days later they replaced the pressure relief valve. In the interim I left the CH off and just repressurised the system any time I desperately needed hot water.

Unfortunately when the plumber switched everything back on he found that the hot water wasn't working properly then instead. If the CH was on it switched over to hot water when you turned a hot tap on fine, but if the CH was off the boiler wasn't firing up properly when you switched a hot tap on. The plumber tried changing a diaphragm he thought might be the problem, but it had no effect, so then he gave up (although at least didn't charge me!) and recommended that I call Vokera directly. He said that in the mean time the CH was now fine and I could switch that on whenever I needed to get hot water.

However...now when I put the CH on the pressure shoots up to 3 bar very quickly, far too quickly to give me time to fill a bath or anything useful before I panic and switch it off again, so I now have no CH and no HW again. The pressure doesn't always seem to return all the way down to 1.5 each time either, so I've had to drain a bit from the system a couple of times.

Could this fault with the pressure rising have been there before and I just never noticed it, i.e. could the pressure rising constantly have caused the pressure relief valve to keep being used and eventually fail? And is the fault with the switch when you turn a hot tap on related, or maybe caused by the plumber, or just a a coincidence? I've never had any problem with this boiler before and the HW was fine until after the plumber had changed that valve.

It is due a service - would that cover everything and fix all these issues? I'm worried that if i call Vokera and they send out one of their engineers it'll cost a fortune, but this plumber didn't seem to know much about this boiler.

Thanks in advance.

Faulty or flat expansion vessel, could happen with any combi. Easily checked and fixed. Boiler's only problem is your fear of paying for someone competent.

A service is just that, a simple routine service!

Your boiler needs a REPAIR ! Thats best by a boiler engineer rather than a plumber who has virtually no experience of boilers like your last one!

Your boiler is solidly built and quite repairable but you do need a competent engineer!
