Central heating manifold spindle is not moving, suspect diaphragm shot, but can anyone tell me what boiler action should push it out, its stuck in the closed position (fully retracted) and boiler appears to be operating normally ??? What event can do to check its normal actuation?

what do you mean by central heating manifold spindle ? do you mean primary flow switch spindle or DHW diaphragm spindle your boiler has both the DHW one is larger about 2 inches in diameter and sits at the right hand side of the boiler as you look at it, do you have CH but no HW or HW only when heating is on ?

Gasmit, if I were you, I would get the boiler serviced as per the manual.. With spindle in that position, your boiler can suffer expensive damage.

Hi thanks for your speedy reply, I'm getting HW whether the CH is on or not, the boiler appears to be working normally. I'm referring to the CH manifold, it's located on he Left side under the pump, and has a spindle with operates a micro switch...but that's the problem... It never moves?

Hi Danny,
You gave me some advice in 2004, for which I thank you. Have had the boiler under a homecare contract and "serviced" every year by BGAS, which is now becoming a struggle as knowledge transfer is getting diluted every year.

Have noticed a small leak now from the heal of the the DHW diverter valve, this appears to have only started since the CH manifold seems to have stopped working, DH manifold was changed 11 months ago.

Will call them out. Have got rather intimate with this boiler over the last 18 yrs, my money's on the CH manifold diaphragm, have had a brand new one in a box in the garage for 3yrs just in case.

I doubt your boiler is serviced as stipulated in the manual. It would not suffer from problems you are experiencing if it was serviced as intended. Your boiler, I bet, is only checked for FG analysis

you really have to get this sorted its a common problem with this model and can cause a lot of damage to your boiler

Thanks for you advice guys, I will get cracking on this and let you know the outcome.

Found the fault, bypas pipe from DHW 3-way diverter to the CH manifold blocked, part number 3183, anyone got a new one?

You would only need a new one if you twist the pipe on the old one when removing just take it out and clear it, I would remove and clean the flow switch assembly too and replace the small diaphragm

Hi Ian, the one union rounded off on me on removal and the olive sheared, it was well solid.

Have just orderd some 4mm pipe and olives, but can't seem to source the unions, I think they are M8 x 1mm pitch, 13mm total length. Will keep looking.

Have replaced spindle, spring, diaphragm etc, unbelievably the old diaphragm was still in tack after 18 years !!

I had a few that the pipe just twisted when you tried to undo, used to have some spare ones from when I worked for Vokera but havent seen a Flowmatic for quite a few years now, I would definately budget to have the old girl replaced they were great in their day but not really worth keeping going now
