Need some info on the Volvo xc90 with the diesel engine, rather fancy one in the '04 to '06 range, have any of you guys out there experience of this vehicle because I've heard conflicting reports! Looking to get an automatic one.

No real experience mate but there are reports of the 4wd system simply not working when it's needed due to hub problems and lack of use.....do get that checked out!
Lots of these used by caravanners - spot the tow bar!

Cheers guys, done a bit more digging and found quite a few problems listed, especially in my price range because they are all high milers. Looks like we are veering towards the Honda CRV Automatic now, these do seem to have good reports about them.

Honda CRV is much smaller than a Volvo XC90 , if that matters to you.

Might do me a favour though Dave, as my Wife will need to drive it as well, hence getting an automatic.

Honda diesel?
Make sure its tight as parts are expensive, in my limited experience.
Volvo good at the price point, engines need topping up with oil as they get older, but a very nice 5 cylinder diesel.
Mercedes ML270 will be also available for not much more .........

Thanks for your valid input. We are now looking at a 2003 - 2005 Honda CRV petrol, I think the diesel ones came in about 2006 and are out of our price range. I really wanted to go for the Volvo XC90 but have read some worrying stories, again its all down to price and in our price range they are all gonna be high milers.

I've got a 2010 R-Design.. Its been ok, no problems with 4x4 system, a few sensors and brake discs needed doing. Very comfortable cars, but a bit under powered especially in the model you are looking at. My advice is, you buy an XC90 if you need a 7 seater X5 sized car. If you don't need a 7 seater 4x4 then there are loads of other cars to look at which are better. Fuel economy is OK for a a 2 1/4 tonne car.
