An intermittent error message has been coming up about a 'gear selector lever' issue. The message states to take the car to a workshop but to please drive on. I took the car to a garage and they said that the gearbox needs to be replaced. Parts and labour will cost £755 ex VAT. £335 for the unit and £420 for the labour.

Wanted to gauge whether that is reasonable or not as it's clearly a lot of money to shell out. The garage has decent reviews.

I was planning to drive from London to Manchester in it on Christmas Eve.

Any advice would be welcome.

What's more surprising is a big bill for selector failure on a newish car with only 24K on the clock. Guessing it's out of warranty? If it's just out, are VW able to help? Have heard some manufacturers have been able to come to some arrangement with cars just out of warranty for failures you wouldn't expect at that mileage.

Thanks for all the advice.

It’s just out of warranty. To go through VW I’d need to get a diagnostic through VW and then there’s no guarantee around how much they’d be able to give until they diagnosed the issue. From 0-50% out of ‘goodwill’.

Just reporting what I have read in newspaper reports and reviews: VW UK is reputed to be very mean with "good will " payments, but if you have 100% VW servicing and it's been done on time, they really ought to pay something.

Have you looked on VW forums to see if this is common ? If so, that may help your case.
