VW Golf back door not opening?

I have a VW Gold GTI 2.0 (Year 2000) and the back door is locked fast on both the inside and outside?

This drivers side rear door just now does not seem to want to open?

I need this to open in order to pass my MOT as its a good car (if a little older but everything else is fine)..

I try and pull the lock inside by the window and this seems to spring back down, as does the handle inside. Any ideas on this for a VW Golf?

It maybe that the lock is gone inside, but pressing the remote key to open, opens all doors except that one which I need to get at.

I am sure this opened about a month ago so not sure if there are any tips or tricks to do this? Currently looking on the web and thought I would post here in case anyone knows a similar trick or whether this is particular to VW's?

Door lock issues are unfortunately common on MK4 Golfs, and your example appears to be from the worst affected production period. This is a bit of a long read, but might be worth it!
