VW Golf GTI

Hi

We have a 1997 (P-reg) Mk3 Golf GTI 2.0 litre (8valve). For the past couple of weeks we have had problems starting it, when you turn the key it doesn't do anything for the first couple of times, then starts fine. It also cuts out when you slow down, the revs drop right down and the engine cuts out (losing power steering) Sometimes it takes a couple of goes to restart it. Any ideas?

Sounds like it could be the good old VW ignition switch.
When it's running, give the key a good wiggle and see if it cuts out.
