VW Golf Mk4 2001 wiper problem

Hi

I got in my car this morning and the front wipers have stopped working. The rear wiper and the washer, operated from the same stick, work fine but the front wipers don't work on any setting.

They were fine on the way home last night. Any idea what the problem could be?

Probably the fuse, but could also be the wiper control relay or switch

I checked the fuse and that was ok. Where will I find the relay and how to do I check it?

I tried the car again at lunchtime and the wipers were working again.....but for how long I wonder

its probably the switch on it's way out then.
You'll probably find over the coming months they will randomly turn themselves on.
Just keep an eye on it and see what happens.

what engine has it got?

It is a 1.6 engine

Relay positions 5+6 on the relay board. Guess it's a big one!

it's a common fault on all mk4 golf's (along with many many more!). The wiper has seized. You can either replace the linkage or repair it. I did mine in a couple of hours. it's an easy job, hardest part is removing the plastic windscreen cowl. Don't try and lever the cowl off with a screwdriver against the windscreen as you WILL shatter the screen!
