Hi guys, I'm trying to do up a 1950's house with a concrete floor.

There is a large gap where the walls meet the floor, normally covered by skirting board, but i think its so big in places that i can't even cover it with a board.

Can anyone recommend a method to fill the recess (see pics). I guess I could just fill with concrete then plaster over?

Any help most gratefully received. Thanks, Al

There should be a gap as the dpm in the wall will be at floor level. You don't want to bridge that.
If it requires filling. Vacuum out so no dust or loose. PVA. Buy mortar ready mixed ( add water)
Fill where needed but leave a gap in the corner so you don't bridge dpm. Cover with skirting

...or alternatively use a foam adhesive to fix skirting straight over the gap. The foam will easily close the gap behind to provide a firm fix. De-dust and mist spray with water first. Weight the boards against the wall because otherwise the foam will push out a bit as it sets. Most of mine looked a bit like that.

What you putting on the floor? You might want to leave a 5mm gap under to tuck the carpet edge in to or if hard floor, weight until that's fitted and then fit skirting.

I've encountered similar issues with properties I've renovated. I cleaned ALL the loose material out with a vacuum, carefully lined each miniature grand canyon with heavy gauge plastic membrane and just filled level with quick-set cement. I figured the 'U' shaped lining of plastic guards against any damp bridges. Worked well for me at least.

Just a little shot over the bows for the unscrupulous carpet fitters out there before we move on! Having watched my builder float off the screed very neatly all around the edges, I then witnessed the utter barbarism of the carpet guy smashing nails through the gripper, which caused multiple unsightly cracks. I know that's how you do it, but it's not cool. I glued the next lot.
