8mm, otherwise the plug struggles to get into the hole and give you a decent fixing. If its too small it can squash up around the mouth of the hole and the fixing just drives through it, without having anything in the actual hole to hold onto.
I tried 8mm but maybe through my incompetance, the holes seemed to big. Although my drill is supposed to be a hammer drill, it sounds no different whether in hammer or drill.
