I want to put up a single, wall-mounted, oak or oak-effect shelf in my kitchen to house a few cookery books. Size up to about 700 mm long, and roughly 270 mm deep. The only problem is how to contain the books and stop them from falling over at each end. I just don't seem to be able to find anything whatsoever that will do the job! I would like it to look nice so don't want metal system type racking. Any suggestions appreicated? Thanks.

simple enough if you are making your own shelves you just make the shelve and the brackes made to match go on top

if the shelve is squareish the brackets would be triangular say 220mm by 370mm

you drill a single hole about 2" down from the top at right angles to the sloping face you drill the plug into the wall at the same angle and assuming the wall is solid with just one no 10/12x 3" screw in each brachet the shelve will be solid

just drill the hole in the wall 2" deep with a7mm masonery bit

if you want additional support affix 2 or 3 mirror brackets along the top edge off the shelve so the books will hide them

Is it as simple as screwing (etc.) some vertical ends onto the shelf? Could be made various shapes of wood or metal.
Or do you need them to be adjustable to accommodate a different number of books, in which case you could put pegs in the bottom and drill matching holes in the shelf.
Or normal bought bookends can be joined with a length of webbing which the books sit on and which stop the ends from spreading.
