I scraped off some flaking paint in my kitchen and revealed what looks at first glance like wallpaper but is in fact a painted pattern done with stencils or a variation on the potato printing we did as kids in art classes. I think the whole job was re-done a few times over the years to keep the room looking fresh. The base paint is distemper rather than emulsion so the walls could not be washed down without damaging the effect.
I would quite like to reproduce the effect and am wondering if there are materials such as decorative rubber stamps available? I know you can buy stencil films for large, complicated patterns but what's the best way to do small patterns? :
