Ive got to strip some kitchen wallpaper and its a right pig to get off. Its that tile effect stuff that has like a plastic coaing on the surface. It only comes off in little inch squares. Any idea's please.
You need some way of breaking through the plastic coating first.
This can be done by purchasing the proper tool from your local diy store or make one by getting a piece of wood, about 6" (old money) and nail some panel pins through it to produce a comb.
You can then use this in a big circular motions on the wall paper to score it.
Use a steamer for best result on a section of the paper at a time, give it a few seconds (about 10) on the paper then move it along, scrap off the previously steamed section, with a wide blade scaper, such as the harris 6" long handled variety.
A word of caution, dont leave the steamer in one place too long as you can sometimes blow the plaster. Good Luck.
Also....if you have a stripping knife trying use it instead of a scraper...the thinner blade may get between the two layers easier allowing you to take the top of first then strip he backing...
If you dont have a steamer then use very hot water with washing up liquid in it to remove the backing.
You may be better geting that top layer off first if you can.....i have found that using a steamer on non permiable paper tends to lead to a hell of a lot of water on the floor...and it can also 'melt' the top paper and make it even harder.
