We have some ripped wallpaper on the chimney breast. The living room and dining room have been joined to make one room and it's the same wallpaper all the way round. I thought about doing just the chimney portion. The previous owners have used lining paper as well.

I know the new wallpaper won't be an exact match but should hopefully be close enough that it's not noticeable.

What's the best way forward?

IMHO the difference will show regardless.
the DIY reluctant parents of my friends discovered some old wallpaper from the hall and tried to match it in over old damaged paper.
it showed up worse than the damaged and faded paper.

My motto is "if you can't hide it, make it look intentional" - so maybe wallpaper the breast in a contrasting colour or "statement "paper
