In gratitude to all those who answered my pipe-furring question, a warming tale.

We fitted the water softener a couple of days ago but I wasn't expecting any benefit for another week or so, as the water gradually replaces the hard stuff in the tank.

The wife said yesterday after taking a shower "This soft water is fantastic. I hardly needed any shampoo..."

Says I "You must be imagining it. The soft water hasn't come through yet."

Then I went into the loft and discovered the shower drew directly from the newly softened rising main, not the cold tank.

So it wasn't imagination - they really do work!

Just make sure that any taps used for drinking are fed from the supply before the softner.

Thanks, Alan. We made sure the kitchen cold tap and garden standpipes were the "right" side.

Anyway, it doesn't taste much different once you've added the scotch ;)

No, it's the Scotch that's the health risk, not the water

What is this - the plumbing branch of the Temperance Society? I don't even drink the stuff. At least I can't remember having drunk any, ever.
