The spigot I'm trying to attach it too under the sink is stepped. The small section is too small and the large section seems too large.

I've tried to bodge it with some ptfe tape and a jubilee clip but it still leaks.

Can you help?

There is a fair amount of stretch to the rubber cuff so if you cut off the small diameter part you should be able to get it onto the bigger section.

would that be the big rubber cuff that originally came on the end of the plastic hose?

I had to cut that off as there's no room for it in the cabinet under the sink. the previous owner had his washing machine hose directly on to the same spigot without a rubber cuff so I know what I'm trying is possible. He just used a jubilee clip and the seal was fine at the join. but his washing machine hose seems to have a marginally smaller diameter (maybe 1mm less)

Is that cuff not just for use when you stuff it down the top of a stand pipe? The diagrams in the instructions didn't show it being used in in conjunction with a waste pipe spigot connection.

No, the rubber cuff is for your type of application. I despair at the number of people who cut these off as I always have great difficulty getting them to seal if it's missing. The water will follow the spiral groove inside the hose and come out at the end of this groove. Try cleaning the spigot and the inside of the hose end apply, silicone sealant and assemble with the jubilee clip. You will need to let the silicone set before putting water down the sink or operating the appliance.
