washing machine connection

Son just moved into new flat.
Plumbing for washer in flat is cold feed only, but his washing machine has cold and hot connections.
I have told him just to connect to cold on washing machine, is this right?

a m/c with hot and cold fill will use hot to bring soap in.

get a Y piece from any good shed, deigned for this situation
