Washing Machine/Dishwasher Waste

Hi all,

Very new to this site but it has been very useful so far as I am very inexperienced on DIY!

I have recently bought a Dishwasher and it stands side by side with my Washing Machine in my utility room. The Washing Machine was already plumbed in when I moved into house and it was pretty simple to connect to the one waste outlet I have in my utility.

When I bought my Dishwasher, I bought a 'Y' connector (think thats what it was called!!), which runs the water supply to both appliances and has been working perfectly. The problem I have is that when I want to use one of the appliances I have to change the waste pipe from each appliance as I still only have the one outlet connection from when I moved in.

I have been to Homebase/B&Q etc...but there are so many I am not sure what I should be looking for. I kinda thought some sort of T connector but cant find anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

you did not look hard then?

if you go to a b& q you will find it in the plumbing section (funnily enough)

you will want a t piece and a right angle.

you may also be betteroff doing it all again if its solvent weld pipe (glued together) you want pushfit (does what it says on the tin)

I would opt for 40mm if you are doing it again

I suppose my issue was not that I couldn't find it, more that there were so many connections that I wasn't sure what i should use at all. I thought logically it would be something like a T connector but due to my lack of experience I really wasn't convinced.

So I need a T connector and a right angle. This is probably a silly question but do I connect the right angle to the current waste pipe and then the t connector to that (all push fit).



Only been in my house a few months, so I am learning as I go along but not very quickly

I see. and welcome to the forum.

It often helps to give as much info as you can, after all we can not see what you have.

the t piece goes where the existing pipe join / is

you then add new pipe to the now unusde side of the t piece.

Put the old vertical pipe in the vertical part of the new t piece

you put the new right angle at the end of the new pipe you just put in (no not the vertical one, the other one)
(obviously you cut the new pipe to length first)

you put the new right angle on the end of the new pipe

you then put another vertical pipe in the new right angle (again cut to size first)
clip as required

job done

oh you will end up with an old right angle (the one you pulled off to add the t piece, throw it away)

you changed it to avoid leaks

oh and before you buy any of it check to see what diameter pipe it is, its either 32 or 40 mm you can buy either size , but one wont fit the other

Sorry - I think I am getting there. You can see why i work in a bank (pen pusher!) You are very comprehensive in what you have said but I got lost a bit when you were talking of additional pipes. All I need to buy is a T piece and a right angle from B&Q. Is that correct?

I have never seen a T piece before so again I am guessing. The waste pipe currently there will not screw loose (it is attached to the something on the floor). If I connect the T piece (vertical) to the current waste pipe I get something that basically still resembles a T ? (I know is sounds stupid).

I know you didn't say this but could you not just connect a right angle pointing upward to either side of the T (horiznotal part) and run your waste pipes into each of them or is that what you are basically saying? (doubt it lol!).
If I could see what shape it should finally look like it would really help. I kind of think it should be like this:

The top part (Is) represent the right angles

The bottom part (1s) represents the current waste pipe and the T piece

Apologies, I will understand if you think I am a fool and suggest getting a plumber but I really really want to be able to do this.

Sorry that diagram cam out completely wrong

Basically with right angles pointing upward at either side of the T piece and the waste pipe connected to the vertical part of the T piece........should it look like a Y

Ill try again but will prob fail
