Any good reason why the drain hose would be siliconed into the waste pipe? If there is then is there a neater way to do it? For example, with an adaptor or similar.

If there is a water trap at the bottom (U bend or similar) which retains a level of water, then the silicone seal is serving no purpose. The trap would be both preventing odours from the drains, and preventing drafts, plus is the proper way to do it. The silicone sealant, suggests there probably is no trap.
