Washing machine fills up with water between washes

Have just moved into a flat where the washing machine (De Dietrich, LZ9616, for what it's worth) always seems to fill a third or halfway with water between uses. It seems that the water comes from the kitchen sink (as we've been washing paintbrushes and then getting painty water appearing in the washing machine).

Is this likely to be a blockage or a balls-up in the way the pipes are set up?

Thanks.

as suggested, raise the grey outlet pipe higher than the place to whicj it is connected, a loop upwards will be fine

Thanks very much.

Now all I have to do is try and get to it (all hidden away in a built-in kitchen sort of way...)
