washing machine fills with water after wash cycle has ended

After a complete wash cycle, if the machine is left unattended with the water supply left on, the machine fills with water and leaks all over the floor.

This water is often smelly, so I at first thought it was water backing up from the waste pipe. I tried removing this from the stand-pipe and still had the problem so it must be from the cold water fill?

If I turn off the water supply to the washer, this solves the problem but longer term I'd like to be able to solve this properly so that the water supply can be left on.

Any ideas?
