Washing machine in Bathroom ?

Just spent a few days renting a Holiday apartment (in England), and was surprised to see a WM installed in a very small Bathroom, further inspection reviled it was wired directly to a switched FCU, and I would also suggest it was located only about 18 inches or 450mm away from the bath. ie Zone 0.
It was certainly close enough to easily operate the controls while using the Bath or Shower.
being even more curious, I tried to find the CU to see if its supply was RCD protected, but I couldn't find it.
I assume the CU must have been located in a locked cupboard at the entrance to the Flat.
I am not that familiar with the new 18th wiring regs, so can someone inform me, is an appliance installed in a bathroom so close to Zone 0 now acceptable, and do Holiday lets need a Periodic inspection like rented property.

450mm from the bath is zone 2, zone 0 is inside the bath.

The switched FCU would need to be outside of the zones, so more than 600mm from the edge of the bath.
Washing machines and other equipment can be installed in zone 2 provided it is at least IPX4, a washing machine will almost certainly exceed that.
Manufacturer's instructions should also be followed, but generally they won't prohibit using a washing machine in a bathroom.

do Holiday lets need a Periodic inspection like rented property.

The recent legislation for rented properties does not cover holiday lets, but any decent landlord should already be having their properties inspected and tested to ensure they are safe.

So, if the electrical installation complies with the 17th or 18th and the FCU is more than 600mm from Zone 0, (which it was) its ok.
If on the other hand, the installation complies with earlier wiring regs its a no go ?
Is that the general synopsis.

Earlier regulations were no different - for switches it's been 600mm / 2ft / out of reach of someone in the bath since the 1930s.

There was a zone 3 for a while, but switches were allowed in it, so that didn't change anything.

Yes I remember Zone 3, I believe that was brought in because of the trend for Bathroom on Suites, so to recap then, you can instal a IPX4 Appliance in a bathroom as long as the FCU is over 600 mm from Zone 0, and the supply for it will not require any Earth leakage protection, to be retro fitted, even if the original installation does not have any ?

The bedroom provision allowed a socket if over 3 meters from shower fitted in bedroom, so when the rules allowed a socket in a bathroom if over 3 meters then no need for bedroom option so removed.

I am not sure about accessibility of the RCD, I have found on some caravan sites the RCD, MCB, RCBO assess is locked, seems a little silly as if it trips you can't reset it. So some staff would need to be close to reset it, but know no rules saying you need assess.
