We have terrible smells coming from our washing machine, they are definately coming from the water outlet pipes (not inside the actual machine)

When the machine is letting water out the smell just hits you, it is a very foul smell.

When some piping under the sink needed replacing recently it was clear gunk was collecting in the pipes, the water outlet pipes that run from out washer go behind our cupboards, then there is a 45 degree bend then the pipes incline upwards........then there is another 45 degree angle to avoid other pipes & meter etc we have in the under sink cupboards..............it is private rented and whoever has done the pipework has basically done a rubbish job!

Any advice on what we should do, is the main problem because of all the angles & bends & the fact the pipe goes up on an incline?

Any advice/tips appreciated :0)

There should be a trap with a vertical standpipe the machine hose fits into.

The pipe should run downhill all the way. Pipework running uphill will remain full of stagnant water, and be prone to blockages and overflowing.

Ideally the number of bends should be kept to the minimum, but there shouldn't be a problem with 2 or 3 bends, unless it does get blocked and you need to get a 'snake' round the bends to clear it.

Some run the machine waste into a tapping on the side of the sink trap thus:-

The standpipe is the ideal way foreward, however if you have one of the undersink spiggot things it is best practice to have loop in the pipe so that the top of the loop is above the plughole level of the sink. This will ensure that you do not have a pipe full of :-

a) old washing machine water
b) Even worse, old washing up water from the sink

Also this will prevent sink waste from back filling your washing machine causing an even worse smell.

And also point the spigot Upwards not down as in the photo

And fit a new drain hose if you can...
