I have a problem with leaks from the Y junction that links my washing machine to the cold water supply. Each time a plumber comes he says it doesn't thread straight, tightens it up anyway and then sometimes days, sometimes months later the joint leaks again. Is there a better way to get a watertight seal than simply relying on a washer in the Y joint?

Renew fittings. :!:
Screw your hose onto a brand new washing machine tee.
Old fittings are not worth messing around with and are relatively cheap to renew. ;)
