Washing machine Pump keeps Running

I got a pallet of catlogue returns in the summer and there was a dented all round Hoover/candy washing machine.My nans is very old so i thought i'll give her the Candy.I turn it on to test ,but as soon as i turn the dial to select any programme the pump just keeps pumping and pumping and nothing else happens.I took the top and back off and it all looks brand new but it has been used as you see some traces of washing powder in the draw.
