Washing Machine - Repair or Replace?

I have a 5-6 year old Whirlpool AWG 384. During spin cycle bearing in drum makes noise a bit like Concorde taking off. Actually makes same noise when drive removed and spun manually. Replace bearing - simple? Don't know if it is simple or not. Also there has been odd black mark left on clothes and rust and grease marks spattered around drive side of drum.

Have not had the back off the drum yet but it seems to me that the drum is leaking into the bearing housing and just replacing the bearing will not suffice. I don't know enough about the way these things are put together to know if it is possible for the drum to leak in this way. Neither do I know how much the parts cost. Does anyone know if I need to replace drum? Can this be repaired without replacing the drum and is it cost effective - or should I chuck it and buy another?

Thanks in advance

Thanks

Wife says it is older than 6 years.

Not sure I want to test my mechanical skills to this extent but I will sleep on it.

I should't if i were you they are hard and very uncomfortable.

if it is over 5 i would have no doubts. NEW m/c. suppose you do change bearings, suppose it all goes well, average life of m/c is 5-6 years

Having slept on it I can confirm that you are not wrong about it being uncomfortable.

It was no ball on that machine I can tell you and I got the needle about 2am when I tried to roll over. But in the round and bearing in mind your comments I think the machine's fate at least is now sealed. I will now race along to the www and find a spinner to bang the drum about.

Out with the old, in with the new.

Let's hope my wife doesn't think this is a precedent.

:p

actually an old m/c tub is very usefull, i have a couple as plant pots. I screwed log roll to the outside filled with "dirt" ( you can tell i am not a gardener) and some bulbs (yes i did put in a couple of light bulbs too, then while waiting for the plants to grow if asked i always commented that "well some one said i should plant some bulbs")
